i haven't posted anything in forever, but here's what i've been listening to this week:

save wrvu

in case you haven't heard, vsc (the nonprofit corporation that owns vanderbilt's wrvu) announced plans last week to sell off the station's broadcast license and move it to an online-only format. although vsc made this announcement late last week, it's clear their decision to stifle dissent was well on its way before then. on september 7 they cynically purchased the domain names "savewrvu.org" and "savewrvu.com" as detailed in wrvu staff's draft letter to the editor of the hustler - a student newspaper also run under the watchful eye of vsc. *update: those supporting saving wrvu have now been given control of the domain names listed above*

although i'm a casualty of the community volunteer dj purge that occurred earlier this year, i still encourage anyone who cares about good radio to sign a petition at the sarratt student center and show his/her support for the station. vsc has made it abundantly clear that our community's opinion on this matter is worthless to them, but we can still try to make our voices heard. you can also let your friends know about this by liking the save wrvu facebook page and follow the discussion online by joining the save wrvu google group.

having said that, i think it's fair to assume that the decision may have already been made and that protests from the student body and the community may fall on deaf ears. earlier this year when vsc announced plans to cut community dj participation at the station, they feigned interest in reaching a compromise only to eventually enact their initial plan. it's clear to me that vsc is more than willing to sell off its most valuable asset to pay for other media projects that aren't pulling their own weight with regards to vanderbilt student media funding.

throughout this entire debate nobody has been able to explain why moving to an online-only format is a better proposition for the station. it took decades of hard work and dedication to make wrvu the high-wattage fm radio station we love today. hopefully with a lot of support from everybody all that hard work will not have been in vain.

don't forget to get out of the house on saturday, april 17 and show your favorite independent labels and record stores some love. if you're on the east side, it looks like the groove at five points will have tons of great live music (emmylou harris, tristen, tallest trees, chris crofton, etc.) and other fun things.

on the other side of the river, grimey's is going to have their own live music set-up (including clem snide), a special screening of the mountain goats movie, yazoo beer, jimmy carl's lunch box bbq, and tons of booths set up in the back yard. radio free nashville will be there too so stop by, pick up a t-shirt, and say hi.

i'm happy to announce that nashville mixtapes has a new home on 107.1 fm wrfn radio free nashville and will be on the air every saturday from 9-11am beginning next week. for those of you unfamiliar with the low power radio movement, lp brings the spirit of independent community radio back to airwaves. as the name implies, low power radio is just that - low power - so coverage can be spotty with an fm tuner and you may have to use the internet or cable tv to pick up the station.

here are all the different ways to enjoy wrfn:

107.1 fm
cable channel 10 (using sap audio - davidson county only)

itunes
vlc player
winamp
windows media player

you can also hear wrfn on your mobile phone by following these instructions:

thanks to everybody for all the kind phone calls, emails, and twitter things. i had always assumed that the only people who heard nashville mixtapes were friends and the occasional radio surfer, but apparently a few people out there will miss the show. as you probably know by now, show #73 was my last broadcast on wrvu for the time being.

i won't be giving up on nashville mixtapes, so take heart. right now i've applied to move over to wrfn which is a low-power station in nashville that has a much better online presence than wrvu. if that move happens, you probably won't be able to hear the show on a regular terrestrial radio but you will be able to pick it up on cell phones and your computer pretty easily.

i'm also talking with a computer geek friend of mine who is willing to set up a podcast and defray all the associated costs (royalties, server space, bandwidth, etc.). it may take a few weeks, but nashville mixtapes will keep going in some form or another. for all you wrvu fans out there, i fully intend to reapply at the station for a fall 2010 time slot.

nashville mixtapes has one more broadcast this saturday and then will go on hiatus until further notice. over the past few semesters the number of community volunteer dj's at wrvu has expanded dramatically and in fall '09 that number reached critical mass. the station has decided to reduce the number of community volunteer dj's by about half and nashville mixtapes didn't make the final cut.

there is hope for the future, however. the show will re-apply at the station in fall '10 and hopefully be invited back to the station at that time. thanks to everyone who listened and please stop by nashvillemixtapes.com from time to time for updates on good music.

show #71 was potentially the penultimate broadcast of nashville mixtapes on wrvu. due to policy changes at the station regarding community volunteer dj's, there is a 50/50 chance that this show will not be around after dec 5. obviously, i'd love to stay with my favorite radio station for years to come but i won't have any details about the future of nashville mixtapes until winter break begins.

but don't worry yet. barring some unforeseen change, you can tune in on dec. 5 for a special show featuring some of my favorite music and a few selections from the current wrvu rotation. until then, i'll be taking a 2 week thanksgiving break.

wrvu benefit show + more

the end will host wrvu's fall benefit show next thursday (nov 19) and everybody's invited to stop by and show their support for the station. $5 gets you in and a $10 donation gets you a limited edition wrvu poster. other schwag will be for sale, so if you want a cool wrvu bumper sticker or whatever i'm sure they'll have it there. every dollar counts.

wrvu dj's will be spinning between sets and the all-local lineup includes:

in case you haven't heard, the board that oversees the station has decided to reduce the number of community volunteer dj's by about half. this change will take effect at the beginning of the winter break and i'm a community dj, so there's a 50/50 chance (at best) that nashville mixtapes won't be invited back to wrvu after this semester.

a lot of people are unhappy out there and have voiced their concerns all over the internet about what this change means for the future of the station's unique character and its unparalleled contribution to nashville's radio listening audience. some people are even considering making their dissatisfaction known by boycotting this and future benefit shows. although myself and the other dj's (from both the student body and the community) appreciate everybody's concern, i personally don't see any merit in boycotting an event that can help the station. if you truly care about wrvu, i hope you and your friends can make it out next thursday. for what it's worth, i supported wrvu long before i was a dj and i will continue to support the station in the future.

elbow's classic debut album asleep in the back is set to receive the full "deluxe edition" treatment with a release date scheduled for oct. 26 in the uk . fans should be ecstatic, although the cynic in me wonders if v2 records is just cashing in on elbow's new found success since the label dumped the band prior to the recording of the seldom seen kid.

regardless, most labels worth their salt know loyal fans will not spend their hard earned cash on a reissue unless it comes with plenty of good features. it looks like there will be little room for disappointment: the whole package will include the band's original debut noisebox ep (which was never repressed after the initial self-release), concert performances, radio performances, the album itself, and what is sure to be a dvd masterpiece produced by the soup collective.

the wrvu calendar has been updated and nashville mixtapes lives on! now the show will broadcast every saturday at noon and thanks to advances in wrvu.org technology you can mark your google calendar accordingly. bad (ish) news: nashville mixtapes will only to run for 1 hour this fall. good news: with fewer station rotation requirements it will be a better show filled with more music from my own collection. i'll take it and like it.

in other news, the summer schedule is ending and that means until further notice nashville mixtapes is in purgatory. will there be a show in the fall? will it change times? we just don't know right now, but hopefully by the end of the week the new schedule will be released. check back here to see what's up.

artists like dan deacon typically skip nashville in favor of atlanta, chicago, or chapel hill (a city that always seems to nab great bands out from under our snooty noses). his brand of electronic noodling is rarely seen around these parts, but thankfully the guy is a different breed of entertainer and will visit our fair city in a few weeks. he seems anxious to bring it to the people with low ticket prices and a set that emphasizes audience participation.

but he'll still have his work cut out for him when he plays the end on oct. 5. not only is that the same night as them crooked vultures at war memorial, but it's two nights before next big nashville kicks off. so most people will either be gawking at the year's newest hot supergroup or saving their cash for an extended weekend on the town.

but i say fuck it. skip the big rawk show and spend a measly $10 to see dan deacon. he may never come back and you'll likely be sick of them crooked vultures by thanksgiving anyhow.

a couple weeks ago the sudio got a facelift, and as of this afternoon the station's website has one too . thanks to wrvu tech god jim hayes, the new site is a vast improvement over the old one which had a very basic look and limited features. it's much more dynamic than before and now boasts a revamped concert calendar, weekly top ten playlists, a chatroom, and a link to a live webcam inside the studio. pretty soon your favorite dj's will contribute to the station's new blog as well.

of course, all the old features are still there so you can find an audio archive of most shows, the station's schedule, and a link to listen to wrvu live online all at the top of the page.

so take a look around a familiarize yourself with the new surroundings. it's just a baby today, bu the new wrvu.org may soon become another bookmarked page on your browser for music enjoyment and info.

southern girls rock & roll camp showcase

if the southern girls rock & roll camp is lucky, it may garner some well-deserved national attention as a footnote in the rise of nashville band those darlins. rolling stone magazine, the new york times, no depression, pitchfork, usa today, and plenty of other national media outlets have picked up on the all-girl band (it's punk, it's rockabilly with attitude, it's grrrrl rock - depending on which one you read) and they're gaining new fans around the world every day.

darlins' bassist kelley darlin (anderson) is quick to point out the importance of the murfreesboro-based week-long camp that she founded to help girls put together rock bands in their hometowns and generally become more involved in music.

sgrrc 2009 begins july 27 and culminates with their annual talent showcase on august 1, so you can still clean up your calendar in time to see middle tennessee's newest talent. 10 bucks gets you in and goes to a great cause.

yk records has a brand new release from local favorite codaphonic entitled edison's rival and you should check it out. the label has a novel approach to releasing albums whereby you can stream the music for free, download it for free, or purchase a limited edition cd with high-quality artwork for a reasonable price. the idea is to get the music out there and it's sure to be an oft-repeated distribution tactic for up-and-coming artists.

not only can you stop by yk records to pick up edison's rival, but codaphonic's cody newman will once again join nashville mixtapes this saturday as guest dj. if his last visit is any indication, you'll enjoy great music not heard nearly enough on the radio. cody is expected to drop by around 10:30am and stick around until the show ends at noon, so make sure to set your alarm clocks and tune in to hear what he's been listening to lately.

out the other, dave paulson, and others have been running rock 'n' roll team trivia night at mercy lounge every few weeks this spring/summer and by all accounts good times are had by all. in preparation for my very first trivia night, i have put together a ragtag team of fellow neer-do-wells from wrvu. armed with formerly useless rock 'n' roll knowledge, we are prepared to test our remarkably insufficient recall skills this sunday night.

when i heard de la soul was coming to cannery ballroom on aug 5 in celebration of the 20th anniversary of 3 feet high and rising, i knew i had to get tickets even though i hadn't listened to it in a few years. on saturday my "20 years high and rising tour" tickets showed up in the mail and today i decided to break out the album that started it al l and give it another spin. turns out it's still a great record and i quickly recalled that a lot of good stuff came out in 1989 - it wasn't all just milli vanilli, paula abdul, and we didn't start the fire.

as a music lover and a dj, i can't help but owe rhino records an enormous debt of gratitude. not only do they put together high-quality re-issues that help flesh out my collection, but their compilations make it very easy to put together a mixtape. in fact, i could play any album from the nuggets series in its entirety on the radio and people would think i'm a big garage rock know it all.

now they're doing it again with a focus on l.a. bands - the four-disc set where the action is! los angeles nuggets 1965-1968 is coming out on 9.22. according to their website, you can expect rarities from the byrds, the beach boys, love, the standells, the electric prunes and more. so save your hard-earned, mark your calendars, and get in line. it will be worth the $64.98 asking price, i'm sure.

the young republic have been making great music in nashville for a while, but for whatever reason they've slipped under my radar again and again. reputable nashville blogger michael eades of we own this town is a big fan and i think i even met the band in the wrvu studios when they visited assorted fruits and cheeses. so you'd think i would have paid more attention before now. after hearing what the young republic are doing, it's obvious that i've really been missing out.

you can hear for yourself this tuesday, june 16 when they perform at edgehill studio cafe. i never thought i'd say this, but if you don't trust my judgement maybe you'll trust taylor swift's:

for years, all tomorrow's parties has eluded me. these small music festivals have all the right ingredients: no corporate sponsorship, great artists curating each event as they see fit, and an ethos that resolutely puts the focus on music and art. sadly, i've never been able to attend but here's the good news: all tomorrow's parties - the film is coming out sep 21.

the film will feature performances by belle and sebastian, portishead, sonic youth, animal collective, iggy and the stooges, gza, patti smith, daniel johnston, mogwai, and many more. if you're lucky enough to see the film before the dvd/download release, i'm green with envy. for now all i have are these cruel (i.e. very tempting) trailers:

there's a nashville band out there that's every bit as exciting as your current favorite local band, but you've never heard of them. david condos has been putting out great material for a while, but a few months ago he teamed up with ian leach, noah denney, and michael ford jr. to form milktooth.

although i enjoy all music that is sent my way, my interest was especially piqued when milktooth contacted me and asked to visit the show. i enjoyed their music so much that i've asked the band to not only talk about their debut ep, but perform an acoustic set and guest dj during the second hour of nashville mixtapes this saturday from 11am-noon.

if you can't make it to the radio in time, i've been assured that the audio archive will be fixed and ready to go by then. also, the band is also putting on an ep release show at the basement later that night (saturday, june 13) so go ahead and set aside $5 now. 21+ as always.

here's a quick info round-up:

* anybody familiar with the show already knows that doves is a regular staple and, by extension of logic, i'm a huge fan. after a 4+ year hiatus i had the opportunity to see doves play for a sold out crowd last weekend in chicago. here are some pictures.

* nashville mixtapes will be back on the air for the duration of the summer beginning this saturday, june 6. mark your calendars. set your alarms.

* bill callahan (aka smog) will be performing at mercy lounge next tuesday, june 9. it's $12.50 after all the fees and should be well worth the small cost to see a minor legend.

* st. vincent will be entertaining all the losers (like me) who won't be sweating it out at bonnaroo. she'll be at mercy lounge on june 11 for $14.50.

* new nashville band milktooth are scheduled to perform and guest dj during the second hour of the show on june 13 ahead of their ep release show at the basement that evening. more info to come on this special broadcast.

* lastly, i lied to anybody who follows nashville mixtapes on twitter. wrvu's tech staff thought they had figured out a way to offer an audio archive library of each broadcast indefinitely, but it turns out that's very difficult to do. it's too techie to get into here, but apparently the newly installed archive directory wasn't designed with long-term archives in mind and there may also be licensing issues with the streaming service the station uses. still, the station assures me that some day the necessary changes will be made and one day you'll be able to get your grubby hands on multiple broadcasts of the show. but not right now.

from the road:

i promised myself i'd leave the blog alone while on vacation, but i was at a cubs home game yesterday and it made me think of long-time nashville indie pop band the features.

like the cubs, the features have a loyal fan base seemingly willing to follow them to the gates of hell. they are also perpetual underdogs who occasionally eek out some well-deserved recognition outside of nashville before their own curse of the billy goat pulls them back. this isn't to say that the features have failed at anything. it's just that, like cubbie fans, features fans are always hoping the band will get what they deserve and we're rarely satisfied with their luck. and just like any self-respecting cubs fan, we're passionate. we want to tell the world all about nashville's most beloved local band.

which leads me to the point: brett white has taken it upon himself to catalogue every features song known to man in a new blog called the damage is done. brett has been a fan of the band for many years. as far as i can tell, ever since he moved to nyc he has been preaching the gospel of the features far and wide across the 7 boroughs and beyond. a couple years ago he put together an extensive compilation of features rarities for me with even more extensive notes - take it from me, brett knows what he's talking about.

so bookmark the damage is done, stop by often to learn everything there is to know about the features, and feel free to drop brett a note with suggestions and interesting factoids.

by the way, the cubs beat the dodgers 2-1 yesterday, so there's still hope for all the underdogs out there.

dark night of the soul

in case you didn't already know, danger mouse and sparklehorse put their heads together and made one of the best albums of 2009. it's called dark night of the soul. like its very distant stepcousin dark was the night (no real relation), this album features an array of contributing artists. david lynch is responsible for the album art and participates on a couple tracks. i'm bound to bring some bias to the table since i'm a big fan of danger mouse, sparklehorse, david lynch, and nearly every artist on dark night of the soul. but this is a great album.

due to problems between danger mouse and emi, the music is not for sale. it is available for download if you can find it and you can visit the dark night of the soul website to support the artists by purchasing artwork and a blank cd. you can also stream the album for a limited time on npr music.

nashville mixtapes is moving and it looks like it's going to be one of those oops-i-forgot-to-bring-my-toolbox kind of moves. here's what's going down:

1) the show will now be on the air every saturday from 10am-12pm. it all begins this weekend and will run until mid/late august.

2) the show will immediately take a vacation from may 17 - june 5, but should be back in full swing on june 6. this also means the site will pretty much be stagnant for a couple weeks. hopefully things will pick up nicely (and the site will have a different look) when i get back.

3) your listening experience will change somewhat. because of internal changes at the studio that are too dull to go into here, nashville mixtapes will be even more mixtape-y (100% what i want to play) during the first hour and far less mixtape-y (random stuff from the wrvu vaults) during the second hour. if you've followed the show for a while this means it'll be similar to last summer.

4) the online audio archive will not work until the june 6 show, so i'll try to put up a good mixtape on the site before i disappear for a few weeks.

there is a new place for music fans to legally download free music without any hassle from the man. it turns out that new york state has a philanthropic music fund that originated from payola fines paid out by big labels to the state. they've taken some of that money and created free music archive. every piece of music is free and has been cleared by people who know copyright law.

i've come across some new-to-me-but-not-new-at-all music lately thanks to the interwebs and free time. like...

the strange boys
they've been around for a few years and are apparently on a bunch of "bands to watch" lists (not that those ever mean anything). it's garage rock at its finest with great lyrics to boot. they'll be in atlanta and tuscaloosa in april, but have no nashville plans yet. the alabama date is the same night as brian jonestown massacre at exit/in, but if anybody wants to carpool to atlanta i'm all for it. their new album ...and girls club was released on march 3 or comes out march 24 depending on the source.

i'm ashamed to admit that i had never heard of the handsome family before this year. they've been around for well over a decade and obviously i've been living in a cave the whole time. i'm planning a trip to chicago just to see this highly accomplished indie/folk band play - that's how much i like the handsome family. and i think their song "so long" will end my show from now on. their new album honey moon comes out on april 14.

our lovely friends at the bbc managed to shovel themselves out of the snow and put together a cool mini-site for elbow fans worldwide. you can't watch it unless you're in the uk, but anybody can listen to the band perform the entire album "the seldom seen kid" live at abbey road. it's likely a short-term deal and the cd/dvd pack is still available for pre-order, but i thought i'd pass along the info nonetheless.

so silver jews played their final concert saturday inside cumberland caverns and taped it for a midnight broadcast on wsm 650am. the jews recently played at exit/in, but this was by far a much better show. joos fans came from all over the country and even bob nastanovich made a surprise appearance. if you weren't able to drive out to the middle of nowhere saturday, don't worry - a professional film crew was on hand to document the occasion. and i took pictures.

while i was 333 feet below ground in the cumberland caverns' volcano room watching history in the making, bbc was broadcasting its own bit of history over the british airwaves. my favorite band (elbow) recently put on a live show at abbey road studios and it was all over bbc yesterday. i guess they're a big deal in england now that they've won the mercury prize, so the concert was broadcast on bbc2 radio, a documentary was broadcast on bbc6 radio, and and the concert film was broadcast on bbc tv. at least we americans have the chance to buy a cd/dvd limited edition box set on march 20. i'm not sure if the dvd will be formatted for u.s. dvd players, but the last time they put out a dvd it was coded for universal viewing. you can pre-order it here.

we're into february, so album release and tour info is steadily coming out for spring and early summer now. you can see what interests nashville mixtapes on the left-hand side of this page.

oh, and nashvillemixtapes.com will soon begin offering downloads of each week's mixtape free of charge. these won't be the actual broadcasts, but the actual songs in an mp3 player-ready format so you can hear all your favorite tunes without all the talk. more on that later...

against all odds, nashville mixtapes has survived the chopping block and will stay with wrvu.

for the next 5 months you can find nashville mixtapes on 91.1fm wrvu now every sunday night from 7-8pm. i've coveted this time slot for a long time, so i'm very very happy with the move. of course, if this doesn't work with your schedule you can still listen to the show's weekly online archive via the wrvu.org show schedule page or by clicking on the little "listen to the show" icon on the top left-hand side of this page.

other good news: the show is now officially designated "specialty rotation" which basically means i have more flexibility when choosing the songs i play. actually, you probably won't notice a difference. but i know i will.

and what better way to kick off the new show designation/schedule than with a triumphant wheeze - i can't make it to the station this sunday because i'll be on vacation. the delay should give the tech guys at wrvu a chance to set up my audio archive thing anyhow.

big thanks to trainee dave for covering most of this week's show. we all have to start somewhere and sadly he has to start on my pitiful show. it wasn't that long ago that i too was a lowly trainee and i have to say dave did a killer job at the controls. anyway, here's what you heard after his hostile takeover mix:
